Taoism is a Chinese philosophy based on the writings of Lao-tzu who flourished in the 6th century BCE. Lao-tzu advocated humility and religious piety and focused on living in harmony with nature. It’s “counter-part” Confucianism, is also an ancient Chinese belief system, which focuses on the importance of personal ethics and morality. Whether both of them are a philosophy or a religion is debated. In this richly illustrated 2-week course, we will compare and contrast these two schools of thoughts and see how they are working together as the “Yin” and “Yang” of Chinese society.
